Fewer Australians are smoking. But despite this, tobacco smoking remains the leading cause of disease and premature death in Australia and a leading risk factor for many chronic conditions.
Furthermore, exposure to second-hand smoke leads to poor health including an increased risk of asthma and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) for children.
On the Central Coast, around one in seven people smoke, although rates are higher amongst those from lower socioeconomic areas.
Central Coast Health Promotion continues to contribute to the implementation of the NSW Tobacco Strategy to help further reduce smoking rates both locally and across the state.
