Who is at risk, ie who are we aiming to "protect"?
CCDGP is holding 3 influenza training sessions on 6/7/09, 8/7/09 and 13/7/09 at Foresters Resort, the Ettalong Beach Memorial Club and the Wallarah Bay Recreation Club. There has been a strong response so call CCDGP ASAP if you wish to attend.

The current approach for GPs is to give free Tamifu to at risk patients, conservative management or private script antivirals for other patients, and to do this on clinical grounds. The only patients who would be routinely swabbed will be health professionals.  Most patients will not be swabbed.

GP's and their staff who opt to be part of the influenza response, and distribution of free tamiflu, should use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including P2 masks.

Efforts should be made to prevent transmittion in GP waiting areas, including alternate waiting areas, or clinic times, and surgical masks for sick patients to wear on arrival.

People will be encouraged to go in to voluntary isolation when they are ill, but will not be directed to undergo mandatory isolation.

GPs should expect a busy season both in the community and the demands on the hospital system. Patients need to be able to attend within the early days of their illness to benefit form antivirals.
