Secondary Supply of Alcohol |

‘Alcohol kills more young
people and is responsible for a greater amount of harm in this age
group, than all other drugs combined.’ (Alcohol and Other Drugs
Council of Australia, 1997) Secondary Supply refers to the illegal sale or supply of alcohol to people under the age of 18 years. Secondary supply is clearly the main way that young people under 18 years of age (minors) obtain their alcohol (Chikritzhs, Stockwell, Dyskin and O'Connor, 1997). Contrary to popular belief, the most alcohol consumed by minors is done in a home setting rather than in public places like parks or beaches (Williams, P. 2001). In fact, the majority of heavy drinking by 15 – 17 year olds happens in a home setting in the presence of adults. ‘Supply Means Supply’ – a Northern Sydney Central Coast Health Promotion initiative has proceeded as a partnership with local licensing police. The police activity has included work specifically targeting the secondary supply of alcohol.
The ‘Supply Means Supply’ work has included high profile media publicity, television and cinema advertising depicting secondary supply scenarios, sporting club websites and newsletters, information dissemination at bottleshops and through local high schools. |
