A Q4 Lunchbox Activity which ran in 20 Central Coast primary schools
during 2006 showed a significant proportion of unhealthy ‘sometimes
foods’ (mainly chips, sweet biscuits, muesli bars) in our children’s
lunchboxes. The amount of fruit brought from home was adequate, but
the healthy core foods such as dairy foods, vegetables, meat and
meat alternatives and breads and cereal foods were below suggested
amounts.
Based on these results and some parent and teacher surveys, a range
of resources were developed and distributed to participating
schools. The Lunchbox Look was repeated in 16 of these schools again
in 2007. Overall, there was an improvement with more fruit serves,
and less ‘sometimes’ foods in children’s lunchboxes. The amounts of
the other food groups remained the same. For more details see the
Lunchbox Look Report.
