Ideas for Staying Active as a family

In response to a Family ACTIVation Competition run in the Central Coast Sun Weekly newspaper, lots of families submitted ideas for how to stay active together. Here are some examples. Thanks to all participating families;

“Our family keeps active by together delivering newspapers we also play hockey and cricket. We tend to our veggie patch in our back yard. When we get home from school and work, we kick around the soccer ball in the backyard, or take a walk with the pram down to the park. The kids are also doing athletics once a week during summer.” (The Mercer Family, Narara) - MAJOR PRIZE WINNER

“Me and my 3 year old son do all the house work and yard work together. He carries the vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs and when he has had enough pushing, mum has a turn! He sweeps the yard. We go to preschool on his little trike so he can pedal fast down the hills and mum holds on his hand then uses it to push him back up the hills. I can then leave his trike at preschool and get a run in on the way back before the day really starts. It just saves us taking the car.” (The Peters Family, Terrigal) - PRIZE WINNER

“My two kids love to do a range of activities, so as often as possible, we set up a backyard circuit, which includes such things as hula hoping for a set time, going up and down the slippery dip a number of times, doing star jumps on the mini tramp, shooting some hoops, dribbling a soccer ball around the clothesline, hitting a golf ball into a bucket and so on. When they have completed each event, they get a stamp on their chart. Then they get to design a circuit for mummy and daddy. The circuit continually changes so they never get bored.” (The Surya Family, Bateau Bay) - PRIZE WINNER

“My family loves to go swimming at the beach and kicking the soccer ball around in the backyard. Best of all, it costs nothing!” (The Reeves family, Berkeley Vale) - PRIZE WINNER

“My husband and our 3 year old son paddle our kayak along the lake to the Lions Park at Budgewoi. I walk our 7 month old son and meet them there. Then we kick a ball around.” (The Hamilton Family, Budgewoi).- PRIZE WINNER

“My family keeps active by walking up & down the stairs, to the shops etc. Gardening, golfing, going on bush walks, bike riding together and playing ball games at the park (and being outside in the fresh air).” (The Forsbey Family, East Gosford) - PRIZE WINNER

“My family is a very active, busy one. Dad is beach coach. I am an age manager and an active member. My brother rows boats for Umina SLSC. My brother and I both play water polo as well as rep water polo. I play netball and my brother referees rugby league games. My mum is so busy taking us to and from everything, all she has time for is a walk around.” (The Brown Family, Umina) - PRIZE WINNER
